Rescue operation underway as whale gets caught in nets

A rescue operation is underway off the Queensland coast with a whale stuck in netting.

The animal appears to be tangled in between the shark nets, with several buoys seen attached to the whale.

Experts from Sea World have now arrived at Snapper Rocks at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, where the whale is caught.

The whale is believed to be a humpback.

It is unclear how the whale became entangled.

Vets are currently assessing the animal and say it could be hours before the whale is freed.

Whales are currently migrating north from the Southern Ocean to warmer waters to give birth.
