Photographer of the Week – Josh Raia

Our latest Photographer of the Week Josh Raia grew up in New England, where he spent his summers exploring Cape Cod and learning about the ocean and its inhabitants. After studying marine biology in college, dive exploration was his primary focus, and becoming a scuba instructor offered him a way to experience marine wildlife encounters firsthand.

Josh soon became interested in underwater photography, because he wanted to share his fascination and appreciation for the underwater world. After permanently relocating to South Florida, he met other passionate photographers whose enthusiasm for documenting life underwater was contagious. This inspired him to become a better shooter, and he now dives regularly at some of Florida’s most popular dive sites to improve his photography skills and add to his portfolio.

During the day, Josh can be found swimming with sharks in Jupiter or searching for macro subjects such as octopuses and frogfish at the Blue Heron Bridge. At night, he often spends hours drifting in the abyss shooting pelagic critters on blackwater dives. He also travels regularly with his Canon EOS R5, and has included some great shark images taken on trips to Mexico and The Bahamas. Later this year, he has trips planned in the Pacific Northwest, Southern California and the South Carolina coast, so keep an eye out for more excellent macro and shark images from Josh in the near future.
