Climate activists have come together to support the ocean in a special way. A group of philanthropists has gotten together to start the Philanthropic Ocean Research Vessel Operators, according to Robb Report. Many of the group are former business executives and they’re hoping to apply business knowledge to help save oceans from climate change, overfishing, and plastic.
Kjell Inge Røkke, Andrew and Nicola Forrest, Wendy and Eric Schmidt Victor Vescovo, and Agnès Troublé are a few of the names dedicated to this project. Each of these privately funded institutions and individuals is focused on a different aspect of ocean health, from DNA sequencing of plankton to ocean diplomacy.

Powered by dollars and urgency, this powerful coalition has the opportunity to make real change. “We’re a small number of people who understand the huge costs and are willing to pay,” says Romain Troublé, CEO of Tara, in Robb Report. Troublé’s group invested about $100 million in research in ten years, “The positive is that we have the freedom to act at will, without waiting.”
“It’s our pantry, it’s our pharmacy and it’s our playground,” says Wendy Schmidt about the ocean.

Lawrence Hislop, communications manager Rev Ocean, spoke to Forbes in 2019 about Røkke’s commitment and focus area. “In terms of priority areas, we quickly realized that we needed to focus on just a handful of areas because there are so many different challenges for the oceans. After discussions with leading marine researchers, we decided to focus on climate change and ocean acidification, plastic, and marine pollution and then overfishing and bycatch related issues.”

There are products you may be using or habits you may have that contribute to plastic pollution. Learn more about how the use of Teabags, Cotton Swabs, Laundry, Contact Lenses, Glitter, and Sheet Masks pollute our oceans so you can make more informed decisions going forward. There are also numerous simple actions and switches that can help cut plastic out of our lives including, making your own cosmetics, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, household cleaners, using mason jars, reusable bags/bottles/straws, and avoiding microbeads!
