Cabo San Lucas is a place so beautiful it boggles the mind. Jutting rocks over white sand, impossibly blue water, hotels and buildings built into the cliffs — everywhere you look, it looks like a postcard. But when the waves are big, it’s not a place to fool around.
It’s easy to get in the wrong place at the wrong time. One small error in judgement can lead to a world of hurt, which was very nearly the case in the video you see above. Jack Tenney, who runs the JoogSquad Youtube channel, showed his 5.66M subscribers just how dangerous things can get.
The southern tip of Baja saw a decent run of swell recently, and Tenney and the rest of the JoogSquad decided to get as close to the maxing beach break as they could. Tenney, who knows what he’s doing in the ocean, didn’t want to get stuck inside in the impact zone, so he paddled farther out. It was then that he saw what he described as “probably the biggest wave I’ve ever seen in Cabo.”
With only a half hour of light left and lines of pumping swell racing towards the sand, Tenney found himself in a precarious situation. Luckily, he was able to get himself back to shore before the sun set, but it’s a reminder that the ocean can get dangerous very, very quickly.
